Hovercrafts

Hovercrafts

We know that a hovercraft is a boat that floats, not on water but on a layer of air over the water.

This makes for a fast voyage.

We can make our own hovercrafts from an old CD, the top of a water bottle, blue tack and a balloon.

Our hovercrafts also float on a layer of air, which comes from the balloon.  This means there is no friction (from the CD rubbing off the table) and the hovercraft moves very quickly.  We discovered that the hovercraft doesn’t fly (because the air would escape too quickly).  Games of air hockey work a little like this, but in the case of air hockey the air is pushed upwards from the table and so the puck is also floating on a layer of air.
