Learning about Spain

Learning about Spain

We have a boy in our class who was born in Spain.

Today his Mum (Marta) and Dad (Roberto) and little brother came to tell us all about Spain and all about Christmas and New Year in Spain.

We learned such a lot of things about Spain.  We saw the Spanish flag and a map of the country.  We were surprised that some small parts of Spain (the Canary Islands and two small cities in Africa) are not too close to Spain at all.  We were surprised to hear that you can ski in Spain and that there are very tall mountains, volcanoes and deserts.

We were very interested to see a Spanish musical instrument, and we were thrilled to learn about the ringing in of the New Year with 12 mini grapes (we even tried this!).  It was fascinating to hear the customs of getting gifts in their shoes from the 3 wise men on January 6th (not from Santa in our stockings on December 25th).  We heard that bold children get coal instead of gifts, but children who are mostly good may as well as gifts get some edible coal (tasted like sugar) to remind them to behave well during the coming year.  Most of all we loved tasting the traditional cake, and were thrilled when one girl became the queen of the class by finding a toy in her slice of cake.

Thank you so much to our Spanish family.

You gave us such an interesting presentation all about Spain.

We hope we can visit there someday.
