Making rainbows

Making rainbows

We were outside today on such a lovely sunny day.

We know that sunlight is “white light” but it doesn’t look white to us.  Sunlight actually seems to have no colour at all.

Teacher showed us that sunlight is actually made of 7 colours.

Sunlight can be broken up into its 7 colours if it shines through raindrops, or through glass pens or prisms.

Today we used glass triangular prisms to separate the colours of light.

We could see red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet (the colours of the rainbow) on our sheets of paper, on our hands, and on the ground.

We are now convinced that white light is indeed made up of 7 colours.
