How Exactly Does a Bicycle Work?

How Exactly Does a Bicycle Work?

Teacher often cycles to school.

Today she brought her bike into the classroom so we could see whether we thought engineers helped to design features on her bike.

We looked at the bell, lights, reflectors, wheels and tyres, gears, brakes, paniers, carrier, saddle, basket, cycling gloves, jacket and helmet.

The most impressive item were the lights that work when a magnet spins on the wheel, causing a little electrical circuit every time the magnet passes the light. The only problem with this is that the lights only work when the bike is actually moving.

With each part of the bike we had to imagine being an engineer...what the problem was and how the engineer came up with a solution to make a fully working bike.

We think being an engineer must be a very interesting job!

We have also looked at old bicycles. The penny farthing bike was the most interesting. We had lots of questions regarding how to get on and off that bike!
