Examining Materials

Examining Materials

We had a really good look at different materials today. We discussed all the different properties of materials as we played a fun "pass the parcel" game. As each layer was unwrapped we had to talk about the material covering the prize. We especailly enjoyed telling if the material was transparent, translucent or opaque, and whether it was waterproof or absorbent. Have a look at all the other words we were using (in the photos below).

Each layer unwrapped hid a small prize and a 2D shape which we chatted about too:- corners, angles, name of the shape, colour of the shape etc.

Next we had a look at each of the layers under the microscope. That was really interesting.

We progressed on to other items too, like skin, hair, sitting mats, school uniforms, and some cotton plant which teacher had found in a bog.

We had a look at a €5 note under the microscope. This is REALLY interesting. There are all sorts of hidden codes (which you can only see under a microscope) to stop people from forging money.
