Our first science lesson of the year focused on volcanoes. We learned about tectonic plates, and how places near the edges of the plates are more likely to have earthquakes and volconoes.
We did a volcano demonstration with vinegar and bread soda (we also added red food colour and wash-up liquid for the deluxe model!).
Now we know that when vinegar mixes with bread soda a gas called Carbon Dioxide is made (this is the same gas that we breathe out). Bread soda is used in cooking because the carbon dioxide it makes when reacting with acidic ingredients in recipies causes dough or batter to rise.
We could blow up a balloon after mixing vinegar with bread soda.
Carbon Dioxide is a heavy gas, and it is great for putting out fires (which we tried after lighting a candle in class).
We learned so much science today. It was a great start to what should be a fun year!
Here's a song we learned today about a volcano in Mexico.
