Mopping Up Oil Spills

Mopping Up Oil Spills

We have learned a lot this year about how to keep our oceans clean.

Today we did an investigation on how to mop up oil spills.

In our groups we had to compare how oil spills can be mopped up with a spoon, a pipette, with cotton wool, with string and with washing up liquid.

First of all we had to predict how effecient each of these items would be in mopping up an oil spill.

We tried with each, then recorded our results.

Now we will discuss what happens with oil spills in the ocean.

The main thing we discovered is that it is almost impossible to take oil back out of the water once it is in the water so our message of keeping oil (and pesitcides and litter) out of our waterways becomes a very important message for all!

Here are some videos of what happens when you add washing up liquid to the oil in the water.
