A class of senior infants, a 1st class and a 2nd class together all had fun together learning about space, doing a volcanic demonstration with vinegar, bread soda, red food colouring and wash up liquid. We know that Venus is the most volcanic planet in our solar system and that Mars has the biggest volcano in the whole solar system.
Vinegar and bread soda mixed together make a gas called Carbon Dioxide (CO2) which we also breathe out and trees need to photosynthesise.
We saw how this Carbon Dioxide can blow up a balloon, and how it can extinguish a lit candle.
Next we tried out various stomp rockets (which are projectiles that launch under air pressure).
We even had a sound rocket (which is also a projectile because it has no fuel). We really like the loud bang it makes when air under pressure blows a hole in a piece of newspaper.
