Traffic Lights

Traffic Lights

It is Engineers Week. We know that engineers identify problems and find solutions.

Today we went looking at traffic lights in our locality.

We watched the sequencing of the lights and discovered that lights turn from green to amber (orange) to red, and then back to green again.

Pedestrian lights do the same, but at opposite timings from the traffic lights for cars.

We were especially impressed with the "map" of the road that is on the traffic lights box. It shows the road lay out to people who can't see very well!

We also listened to the different sounds that traffic lights make. Different sounds with different messages (stop and go).

We discovered that traffic lights in different countries do not all look the same. We found this very interesting.

Lastly we found a few other objects that we iknow engineers made...ramps, kerb drains, flagpoles, chains for the gate.

We realise that being an engineer means working out practical solutions to make life easier. It sounds like a really fun job.
