Engineers Week: Traffic Lights in our Neighbourhood

It is engineers week.  We talked about the job that engineers do, and then we investigated traffic lights.

We looked at the traffic lights just outside our school (for cars and for pedestrians), their colours and their sequencing.

We listened to the different sounds the traffic lights make, and we talked about how this would be a wonderful feature for people who are hard of hearing.

Back in the classroom we discussed what opaque, translucent and transparent mean.

We sorted materials into each of these categories.

We mixed colours by putting coloured sellophane sheets against the window and we looked at the classroom through coloured Quality Street wrapping paper squares.

We discussed the sequencing of traffic lights and pedestrian lights in Ireland.

We think that engineers have very interesting jobs and we hope some day that some of us might a job as an engineer.

We hope to design and make our own model traffic lights later on in the week!
