Learning About Soil

Teacher brought a bag of soil from home.  We put it through a sieve to see what we could find in it.  We found leaves, roots, a worm, stones and muck.  We examined these things with magnifying glasses.

We added water to a half cup of soil to see what would happen.  We found that the roots, leaves and twigs floated to the top and the stones and heavy soil sunk to the bottom.

We also tried cleaning the water using filters.  We thought we could use our sense of sight to see which filter worked best by seeing which water ended up looking the clearest.  The filters we used were: sand and stones, cloth and cotton wool, a coffee filter.  We found that the coffee filter cleaned the water better than the other filters.

We also watched some tigtagworld.com videos about soil.  We learned a lot about soil today.
