Making Gloop with Cornflour

For Hallowe’en we made some lovely slimy gloop.

We mixed cornflour, water and a little red food dye to make it look more like blood and guts.

The mixture is a liquid, but it acts like a solid when we punch it or jab our fingers into it.  We can even pick it up and roll it into a ball.

It is a “non-Newtonian liquid”.  So are custard and ketchup.  That means that if you are trying to get ketchup out of a glass bottle you should ABSOLUTELY NOT hit the bottle.  If you do, the liquid ketchup will become more solid.

Science is so interesting!
